The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted us all, and disrupted the connections and interactions that are integral to everyday life and the pursuit of arts and cultural activities. The arts sector has been amongst the hardest hit by the rapid economic shutdowns and important social distancing measures put in place to mitigate these extremely challenging circumstances.

In response to this, Council is releasing a series of ‘In the Time of COVID-19′ employment opportunities for artists that are aimed at engaging artists in doing what they do best – responding to the world around them.

These programs will have a twofold effect: providing paid opportunities to local artists and the wider sector, and delivering high quality artistic outcomes to the Nillumbik community that are accessible through current restrictions and speak to this incredibly unique time in history.

Antisocial Behavior during the teenage years: Understanding developmental risks

Some of you may find this research article useful and helpful. It reinforces the need and importance of prevention measures. If constrained of time to read the whole article, just note some of the conclusions below…

Findings across these two studies describe key developmental features of delinquency that could be further targeted in intervention and prevention programs to reduce adolescent crime. First, programs and policies should work to reduce the salience of rewards for teenagers. One way to do so would be to highlight the temporary nature of antisocial rewards (such as impressing peers and an emotional ‘rush’), while simultaneously highlighting crime’s serious and long-term negative consequences (Modecki 2016, 2009). That said, efforts to counter teens’ reward perceptions should be deployed early on, well before 9th grade (age 14), because by this stage youth appear to have already identified crime as especially rewarding.

Second, programs and services should focus on emotion regulation and anger control in particular, to improve young people’s resilience and prevent delinquency (Landenberger & Lipsey 2005). Holistic approaches may be best suited to improving self-regulation and coping skills, including approaches that balance law enforcement with assisting youth and reconnecting them with supports from families, schools and communities.

These types of supports may be most effectively delivered in partnership with respected community members, by offering a range of support services, and by offering these within an open-door framework. In all, because offending among those in mid to late adolescence tends to be especially costly for society (Piquero, Jennings & Farrington 2013), these types of front-end interventions to divert youth from antisocial pathways early on should reap monetary and social benefits

Up to $10,000 Start-up grants to start With One Voice Social Franchise choirs – Rnd 6

We are very excited to announce our 6th With One Voice Social Franchise-Community Choir Grant round is NOW open, providing up to $10,000 in seed funding to community groups around Australia.

Start-up Funding Overview
Creativity Australia is building a happier, healthier, more inclusive nation, through the neuro-scientific benefits of community singing. The With One Voice Social Franchise program is about building supportive networks, strengthening diverse communities and inspiring individuals to find their voice.

Together, we can change the world… one voice at a time. With One Voice choirs are led by professional conductors, rehearse weekly followed by supper and perform at community and corporate events.

To make it easier for communities to start their own choir, Creativity Australia is offering a limited number of start-up funding grants of up to $10,000. Successful applicants will receive the start-up grant and join a 12-month intensive mentoring program to guide them through the process of building their own With One Voice Social Franchise choir.

Success is determined by our unique “Health of Choirs” indicators that measure member engagement and participation through our personalised program App. During the first six months one of our program staff will mentor the organizing committee to interpret the indicators and use them to focus their efforts to lay a strong foundation for the choir to succeed, be socially inclusive and build community wellbeing and inspirational outcomes for participants.

How the With One Voice Social Franchise program works
With One Voice Social Franchise programs are set up and ran by local volunteers using the resources and materials provided by Creativity Australia. By establishing a local community choir under the auspices of Creativity Australia (as a registered charity) you hold a licence that enables the choir to raise funds to support projects and initiatives at a local level. The choir is set up as an unincorporated association under the umbrella of Creativity Australia. This includes an independent bank account which is jointly managed by the local choir volunteers and Creativity Australia.

There are seven key components to the With One Voice Social Franchise program:
-bringing together a diverse range of local community individuals and organisations to promote, commence and participate in the program
-finding an extraordinary music leader (who is empathetic and inspiring)
-finding a safe, nurturing space to sing (that is accessible and close to public transport or infrastructure)
-seeking out diversity (all are welcome…all ages, backgrounds and cultures…no auditions)
-showcasing your choir … share the love (perform locally, celebrate accomplishments)
-nurturing social connections (rehearse weekly, share supper, share the “Wish List”)
-building sustainability (develop community & business connections, recruit some helpers, start fundraising).

Funding is not prioritized for any particular group or type of organisation, however, there is a set of criteria that applicants must meet. Please see the information pack that can be downloaded from the website for more information

The organising committees of With One Voice Social Franchise Choirs must represent the community and applications will be assessed based on their diversity and/or plan to achieve diversity. If you would like assistance on whether or not your group or organisation would be suitable to help establish a With One Voice Social Franchise choir, please contact Creativity Australia. Programs Manager – Settlement, Youth and Families

An exciting leadership opportunity has become available within the Brotherhood of St Laurence’s Multicultural Communities Team (MCT). MCT works with both established and new and emerging communities, building their capacity and supporting them to achieve their aspirations and ensure that they achieve successful settlement and full access to the social and economic life of Australian society. The Programs Manager – Settlement, Youth and Families manages family services and youth employment readiness programs with those from refugee, migrant and asylum seeker backgrounds. A key part of this is staff supervision, stakeholder liaison, contract management and service development. The position is responsible for the delivery of MCT’s Settlement services, including the State Government-funded Integrated Family Services (IFS) program in partnership with the North-East Child & Family Services Alliance and the Federal Government-funded Youth Transition Support Pilot. There is also the opportunity to contribute to the Brotherhood’s influencing work with government through policy submissions and build sector capacity through co-delivering Cross-Cultural Responsiveness Training. To meet the selection criteria, candidate will require:

qualification in Social Work or Psychology and extensive experience in providing complex Settlement with CALD individuals and families experience in leading range of innovative and effective initiatives to engage refugee and other CALD communities in decision making processes and embedding a culture of community engagement in programs demonstrated experience in program management and development of community services programs, including experience in contract management and meeting performance targets with multiple funding sources demonstrated leadership experience, including provision of clinical supervision and leading staff across multiple programs well-developed stakeholder relationship skills.

The position is full time at 38 hours per week. Salary will be between $76,132.68 – $79,610.44 per annum, based on skills and experience plus superannuation. Attractive salary packaging provisions are available to increase take home pay. What is the draft Victorian African Communities Action Plan?
The draft Action Plan was released on 15 November 2017 and sets out a range of solutions to issues that young people experience, and many actions are focused on empowering youth to lead, and helping youth connect and work together better.
You can download a copy of the draft plan at multicultural.vic.gov.au.

Who is developing the plan, and why?
The plan is being developed by the Victorian Government’s African Ministerial Working Group, which is made up of African community leaders and young people. The draft Action Plan aims to address the needs of all African Victorians, especially vulnerable groups that could benefit from greater support, over a 12-year strategy.

The working group will submit the final plan early next year.

High Commissioner to Kenya

Today I announce the appointment of Ms Alison Chartres as Australia’s next High Commissioner to the Republic of Kenya, with non-resident accreditation to Burundi, Rwanda, Somalia, Tanzania and Uganda. Ms Chartres will also be Australia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT). She will be accredited to the East African Community and the International Conference of the Great Lakes Region.

Australia enjoys warm relations with East African countries through our shared membership of the Commonwealth, the United Nations, the World Trade Organization and the Indian Ocean Rim Association.

We collaborate closely with Kenya on education, agriculture and counter-terrorism. Our commercial relationship is strong with Australian companies investing in Kenya’s mineral, oil and gas sectors.

Ms Chartres is a senior career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and was most recently Assistant Secretary, Development Policy and Education Branch. She has served overseas as Counsellor, Australian Mission to the United Nations, New York; Deputy Development Coordinator, Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI); Adviser, Solomon Islands Peace Monitoring Council; and as Second Secretary, Australian High Commission, Port Moresby.

I thank outgoing High Commissioner John Feakes for his contributions to advancing Australia’s interests in Kenya since 2015.

11 boys undertook 6 months counseling on culture, entrepreneurship, law, ethics from Jun 16. The activities included sleepovers and camps. The circumcision will be on 10/1/17 after which the boys will stay together for 10 days during healing.
