Let me tell you, if you weren’t at the Tamaduni Festival at Williamstown Town Hall, you missed a spectacle! Now, the first surprise? Kenyans arriving on time. Yes, you read that right! A cultural anomaly that defied all laws of “African Time.” Shock of the century! But somehow, we managed to show up early, as if we were trying to prove a point.
As soon as you entered Williams town, it was like stepping into an African Chief's coronation. Vitenge fabrics so bright and flamboyant, you’d think Olaibon himself had summoned a wedding party in the middle of Williamstown. The Vitenge colors? Like a rainbow exploded and landed on every Kenyan within a five-mile radius. The atmosphere? Wakanda Forever vibes. I mean, what else do you call it when the diaspora shows up dressed to impress like they’ve just walked off the set of a movie?
Chebet and Ndinda were not playing games. These ladies weren’t just here for the Tamaduni experience; no, they came husband-hunting! Chebet’s kitenge was not just a dress, it was a declaration: “Wife Material Inquire Within.” And Ndinda? She was on a mission, looking like she’d stepped straight out of a bridal magazine. This was more than a festival; for some, it was a matrimonial audition!
And then there was Nico. If you thought Nico looked familiar, you weren’t wrong. This was the same guy you probably saw on night shift just 12 hours ago. But somehow, Nico had transformed into a red-carpet stunner. Who knew we had this level of fashion concealed in our late night shifters? The shift-to-suave transformation was real!
Now, the competing community groups? Top secret. Costumes were treated like classified information, sneaked into the venue like contraband. The anticipation was thick as we all waited for the show to kick off. And, in true Kenyan fashion, we did have a few technical hitches. But relax! Our Ancestors had us covered – the show must go on!
The Gen Z performance was... something else. They clearly read the brief, but let me tell you, these kids live by their own rules. Hip Hop, Amapiano not quite what we expected for a cultural festival, but this is Gen Z we’re talking about. They don’t tishika anything! They vibed, danced, and left everyone confused but entertained.
And then the Luos hit the stage. Wueh! Let me tell you Maina, the ancestors of Omolo Ka-Nyunja descended upon Williamstown Hall like a scene from a folklore epic. Dressed in white robes with green and red stripes typical of the Legio Maria, they stormed the stage wailing, thumping, and leaping, all while giving us Nyamgondho Kombare vibes. The whole hall was alive!
The Luo performance was a display of sheer majesty. These guys eat life with a big spoon, and they showed up ready to outshine everyone. Luo is a Lifestyle! Not to be outdone, they started throwing real money on stage. Yes, you heard me – real money. Because, why not? It was a “billionaire challenge” out there, and the Luos were winning hands down. If it wasn’t for the Nyatiti tunes, you’d have thought you were in the middle of a stock exchange.
....to be continued
